NodeSquirrel is a project of Gorton Studios, a Drupal design and development firm from the Twin Cities, Minnesota. It was originally conceived and architected by Ronan Dowling, lead developer at Gorton Studios and the creator and maintainer of the popular Backup and Migrate Drupal module. Gorton Studios has been building great Drupal sites for a long time and contributing back to the Drupal community while we're at it. If you want to know more about us and our work, the Gorton Studios website is a good place to find out more.
The History of NodeSquirrel
It all started with frustrations around backups. In 2007 Ronan wrote the Backup and Migrate module to make his life easier as he pushed databases around between sites and environments. He shared it with the world later that year and—as it turns out—others had the same needs. Backup and Migrate took off and is now one of the top 20 Drupal modules running on well over 300,000 sites.
The idea to create an online service to compliment the module came in late 2010 and by the end of the year Ronan, working in his free time, had a rough prototype running. The journey from concept to product started in earnest in early 2011 when the rest of the Gorton Studios team joined the effort and we began publicly testing the service. NodeSquirrel launched in October, 2012, after about a year-and-a-half of testing and feedback from our many Alpha and Beta testers.
